Ceramic, Taíno petroglyph of Cemí.
Measures 10in x 7in.
A cemí (also spelled zemí) in Taíno culture is a sacred symbol representing a deity, ancestral spirit, or natural force. In petroglyphs, a cemí often appears as a triangular or mask-like in shape, carved into stone to honor or invoke spiritual power.
Cemís were believed to house spirits—either gods like Yúcahu (god of agriculture) or ancestors, especially revered caciques (chiefs). Physical cemí sculptures were used in ceremonies, often placed in homes or sacred sites. Some held cohoba, a ceremonial snuff used by shamans. Many cemís were linked to fertility, rain, crops, and protection from harm.
Cemís are a beautiful fusion of art, belief, and identity—deeply woven into Puerto Rico’s Indigenous heritage.
